Anti-colonial poetic feminist geographies: two presentations, two cities

Although she works in fields of medical education and health, Sarah de Leeuw is first and foremost a geographer and a poet. And an anticolonial feminist. She brought all this to two recent presentations she gave in April and May 2025.

In April 2025, as part of the American Association of Geographers conference, held in Detroit, de Leeuw presented the Annual Cultural Geographies Lecture. Entitled “Relineating Cultural Geography: Poetry for New Attentions in the Discipline and Beyond” the lecture explored poetics as means of writing against colonial constraints.

In May 2025 at Carleton University in Ottawa, de Leeuw was part of a panel that delivered the Canadian Association of Geographer’s (CAG) Suzzane Mckenzie Memorial Lecture (SMML) at the CAG Annual Conference. Spanning three generations of feminist geographers, the panel lecture explored the failures of feminism, feminist geographies of the present, and possibilities of a productive future feminist geography.
