Samantha F. Jones

Samantha Jones (she/her) is an earth scientist, poet, and editor based in Moh’kins’tsis (Calgary, Alberta), Treaty 7 Territory. She is Black Canadian and white settler with roots in Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario, and has called Alberta home for nearly twenty years. Sam joined the Health Arts Research Centre as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in September 2025. Her research, Poetic forecasts: Using creative practices to anticipate wellness challenges and needs in a changing climate, aims to use short-form poetry as a method to link weather and climate factors to lived experiences of health and wellness.

Sam has a BSc. (Hons) in Earth Sciences from Dalhousie University, and an MSc. in Geology and Geophysics and a PhD in Geography from the University of Calgary. Her PhD research focused on carbon dioxide and methane cycling in Arctic inland waters and the coastal ocean, and included an interdisciplinary investigation of poetic inquiry as a method of engaging in systems thinking. Sam is also a literary writer and her first book, Attic Rain (NeWest Press, 2024) was awarded the 2025 Robert Kroetsch Award for Poetry and was a 2025 Alberta Literary Award finalist. She is one of six member of the Land and Labour Poetry Collective, who co-edited the new anthology, I’ll Get Right On It! Poems on Working Life in the Climate Crisis (Roseway Publishing, 2025). Sam currently serves as Member-at-Large on the Canadian Black Scientists Network Steering Committee and is a member of the League of Canadian Poets and the Writers Union of Canada.
